One Tough Kid

Well the nurses and the doctors confirmed today what we already knew, "he is one tough kid". Let me catch up to speed on our day today. Shay has been worked on literally non-stop today beginning at 7:30. There has been a steady parade of machines, nurses, and doctors passing our waiting room headed to Shay's room.  Let me go ahead and say that Shay is off the bypass machine right now and his body is responding very well. The is a very important hump that we got over today. The main focus today has been getting all of the air and fluid out of Shay that has built up in him as a result of being open so long (let me just throw in that mom and dad got to see their son's beating heart today as they walked into the room with his chest fully open...I had the opportunity but chose to pass on that one). They are getting to a point where they would like to close him up but he is so swollen from being open that they can't get him closed right now because it would create too much pressure on his heart. Shay is moving the direction that we need to but I want everyone to understand that he is still very sick. What we learned to day is that Shay arrived at the hospital "septic." What this means is that when his heart could not properly pump blood through his body bacteria was getting backed up and going to all of his organs. The bad news first. Shay's lungs have a lot of fluid on them from being septic and from the surgery. Shay also has issues with his gallbladder and liver. They are going to put him on a special vent to help with this. The good news is that his brain activity and kidneys look good. Once again I say Shay is a tough kid. He has been walking around and going to school with all of this going on for several weeks.
The doctor was very clear that we have a "long long long road ahead of us."  So there is a lot going on but I am breathing a little easier tonight because God has answered our first prayer. His heart has gotten stronger and the bleeding is slowing! Praise God for showing us favor and making Shay's heart stronger. Thank you to each of you who have committed to praying.

We are anticipating Saturday being a day of some setbacks just because of everything he has been through today. A bit of a lengthy post but wanted to fill everyone in. This was a step in the right direction. I have another awesome story to share with you about the Fair Grove student body. I will share this in a post later tonight.

Shay, I’m so glad you’re getting better and I hope it will be over soon. While Chris and Kelly are down there with you, Haley, Macey and Emaley got to spend the night with us. (Man, the things we gotta do to get a sleep-over on a school night!) Me and Haley have been thinking about you non-stop. The Fair Grove middle school and high school had a program called “Hats for Shay’s Heart” today. Almost everyone in school was wearing a hat. There was even this one kid that had four hats on. We send you love and prayers.

  11. Alright Shay, I'm a little tired so I'm headed off to bed. Here's a bed time story for you. Last night I didn't sleep well. I kept waking up every 30 min or so to this obnoxious snoring. Like usual, I kicked Jason and told him to roll over. The snoring just kept on and on and on and on. At about 3:00 a.m. I woke up and realized that Emaley was sawing some serious logs next to me in bed. Jason didn't appreciate the bruises. Rest well cause we will be there tomorrow. Love you!

  12. Dear Lord,
Thank you for helping our son's heart grow stronger. Thank you for holding his hand while he struggles on this path. Keep him in your loving arms while he is healing. Thank you for blessing us with incredible friends and family. Though we do not always understand your path for us Lord, we thank you for letting Shay bring so many people to you. Please continue to keep our son safe and strong in your love. We pray that you continue to make him stronger and heal him completely. We love you Lord, Amen.

  15. Hi, Shay.
I finally got to log on to my own home computer so that I can write to you, and Chris. I am so happy to hear the positives about your condition. HELLO--- your parents saw your heart beating and your brain function indicate you know what is going on. You hang in, there, Shay. I knew when I first met you to enroll you at Fair Grove High School, you were one special person.
I am also so thankful that you are willing to sit at the same table and eat lunch with my daughter and Kristin and Katy. I missed you there for several days. I had brought cake and some snacks for you guys.
Okay, I'll save some more special treats for you when you return.

You are so loved and so special.

Use God's strength now. Continue to grow stronger. You have an army of Christians and Eagles fighting for you as best we know how.

    Your Counselor.

    Randa

  16. Shay,

Sounds like you’re getting better every day. You are truly a warrior, with an entire army of people praying for you every moment of the day. We’ll check back again this evening to get our daily Shay report.

  17. Shay, OH MY GOSH! Okay, so word got out that we are headed your way. We are having to rent a Uhaul to bring all the cards, posters, and care packages your way. JK We can't wait to see you. Jason is having practice this morning but is looking more forward to coaching you up this evening. Allie has a special little cheer wants to do for you. Thank God she knows how to spell your name...."Give me a "S"....Give me a "H"...." She says she might go out for cheerleading next year...but only if you do. And she doesn't want you using some lame excuse like, "The doctor says it's too much of an impact sport." After watching our school district, we have so many natural cheerleaders. I got moves of my own but the kids won't let me show them to anyone. We love you and will see you soon.
